The online investigator is on a pitch hole for the change of Facebook graph search

Facebook launched the graphics search six years ago. Mainly, it was developed for the users so that they can explore the contents around the platforms. The specification was relatively low for them for a long time. The major announcement for this update was in 2014 when the mobile version started rolling out. It almost became a very important aspect for the investigator. It helped them to collect evidence against the abuses, war crimes, human trafficking, etc. Suddenly, we came to know that the Graphic search feature was suddenly turned off.

The user was able to search the graphics in any kind of plain language. But they have to use the language in a very particular domain. For example, we can see that if any person has liked any photos of someone, we can’t trace him easily, but we can easily find him if he had checked in any kind of city or place at that same date and time. The graphics search was also an important aspect for the organizations like Bellingcat which is an investigative journalism website which used to document the Saudi-led airstrike took place in Yemen. This was known as the Yemen Project.

Different types of investigators have already used this Graph design technique so that they can build a tool which is known as stalkScan. But after the Graph search turns off, they have to stop their services or offer their clients very little service. Right now, stalkScan has an announcement on their website which says that:

“As of June 6th, you can scan only your own profile with this tool. After two years and 28M+ StalkScan sessions, Facebook decided to make the Graph Search less transparent. As usual, they did this without any communication or dialogue with activists and journalists that used it for legitimate purposes. The creepy graph search itself still exists but is now less accessible and more difficult to use. Make sure to check yourself with this tool, since your data is still out there!”

Facebook is already trying to cope up from all the problems. Right now, the online platform is facing different types of difficulties like Cambridge Analytica data scandal. They have already declared that they have stored hundreds of millions of passwords which are written on plain text.

A spokesperson of Facebook mentioned in a statement that:

“The vast majority of people on Facebook search using keywords, a factor which led us to pause some aspects of graph search and focus more on improving keyword search. We are working closely with researchers to make sure they have the tools they need to use our platform.”

But one of Vice’s sources, a current employee at Facebook, said within the company there is:

“lots of internal and external struggle between giving access to info so people can find friends or research things (like Bellingcat),  and protecting it.”

Right now, the TechCrunch team is already in a connection with Facebook so that they can gain more pieces of information.

Microsoft finally brings its To-Do application to the Mac operating system

In the year 2017, Microsoft said that it will be shutting down Wunderlist which was a company acquired by Microsoft in order to forge their to-do application.

After acquiring the company, Microsoft released its to-do app. It has launched the To-Do as the application is called on Windows, Android, and iOS and expanded its feature set. This application will now be available in Mac operating system too.

This morning, Microsoft announced that their To-Do application will now be available in the Mac operating system. All the core features of the application will be working with the application. Some of the handiest features of this application are utilized tags, share list, work offline and manage tasks. The Mac operating system will take advantage of the new platform which offers a handful of shortcuts.

There was a Worldwide Developer Conference this month where the company ended up announcing all their tools and they started calling it Project Catalyst. Under this project, Apple is trying to bring all the applications to release their products for the Mac operating system. The Project Catalyst helps developers build a new application with the help of the existing codebase which will is being used in iOS applications.

Microsoft was not ready to be a part of the Project Catalyst and this is why they went in a very different route. The company wants to ship totally brand new applications for the Mac operating system.

“We’re not currently working on new features for Wunderlist as we’re concentrating on our new app, Microsoft To-Do,” a spokesperson said. “Once we are confident that we have incorporated the best of Wunderlist into Microsoft To-Do, we will retire Wunderlist,” they added.

Google accused of copying lyrics of different songs from Genius for their search results

Google accused of copying lyrics of different songs from Genius for their search results

In a recent report from the Wall Street Journal, there have been accusations made on Google by Genius Media by saying that Google copies song lyrics from their website to use them in their search results.

If you have ever looked for Google Search, then you have seen that there is a box appearing alongside the general search results. It basically shows the lyrics of the song. Some lyrics websites have taken issues with this because this means that they will receive less traffic from users.

Genius Media is accusing Google of copying all the lyrics directly from their website and using them in Google search results.

Genius made a change to its site back in 2016 where it started:

“Alternating the lyrics’ apostrophes between straight and curly single-quote marks in exactly the same sequence for every song.”

This effectively acts as a watermark for the copy, and when the apostrophes are translated into Morse code, it spells out “Red Handed.”

Google has been notified by Genius multiple times in the last two years about the stolen lyrics. The company had already explained that all the lyrics were directly licensed from partners. Google also came out with an official statement that they will be looking over and investigating the whole matter. Google is not really at fault right now because past complains from Genius might have triggered an investigation far more sooner but nothing like this has happened yet.
